Abstract

Historic transfer techniques for etching and engraving – from design to printing plate

This article concerns transfer techniques used for intaglio printmaking and is the first ever to give an overview of this subject over a period of six centuries from the earliest copper engravings from around 1420 to the present day. It reaches from well-known transfer techniques common in other disciplines, too, such as tracing, through typical printing techniques like offsetting and soft-ground etching to true reproduction processes.
