Silent Masquerade

Abstract

In 2021, within COME IN TENT, I worked with Egúngún costumes from the former Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg. Originating from the Yoruba in Nigeria, their histories within the museum were unknown. As ancestral masked figures, Egúngún mirror society through dance. My own Yoruba family history is marked by Christian mission and rupture. In the papercut series Silent Masquerade, dissolving bodies become shifting forms – an intimate ritual of memory, loss, and listening.
