About the Journal
Mission Statement
RIHA, the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art, launched the RIHA Journal in 2010. It is a peer-reviewed, Open Access e-journal focusing on the art history of Europe and the wider Western world from Early Christianity to the present day. RIHA Journal particularly welcomes articles addressing topics of transregional or international relevance, exploring artistic interconnections and cultural exchange, or engaging with important theoretical questions shaping the discipline. As a collective endeavor, RIHA Journal seeks to disseminate research produced by scholars from around the world and, in doing so, to foster dialogue across scholarly communities.
Individual Articles and Special Issues
RIHA Journal publishes original research articles only, either as individual contributions (Articles) or as collections of articles devoted to a common theme (Special Issues). In either case a double-blind peer-review ensures the highest standards of scholarship. Individual articles are published on a rolling basis forming one open issue per year (running from January 1 to December 31). The number of special issues published each year varies. We invite submissions from scholars affiliated with RIHA member institutes as well as from researchers in the fields of art history and visual studies at large.

Double-Blind Peer Review
Manuscripts that qualify for closer consideration undergo double-blind peer-review by two experts (see the RIHA Journal's guidelines for reviewers). The peer reviewers are selected by the editors of the RIHA Journal. The peer review process usually takes eight to sixteen weeks. Authors are kindly asked to prepare their manuscripts for anonymous review. In particular, any first-person references to their own publications should be removed. It is RIHA Journal policy to keep the peer review process anonymous throughout the review stage but, if an article is accepted for publication, to publish the names of both peer reviewers alongside the article, unless they request otherwise.
Languages of Publication
RIHA Journal publishes articles in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. With regard to manuscripts written in another language, RIHA Journal encourages parallel publications in both the original language and in translation (e.g., Polish and English). Translations have to be organised by the author (or guest-editor of a special issue) and must be carried out by a professional translator. The same applies to articles not written in the author's native language: These must - prior to submission - have undergone editing by a professional foreign language editor.
Open Access
RIHA Journal is a not-for-profit e-journal committed to the principles of Open Access: All articles are freely available immediately following publication.
Authors' Rights
Authors retain the copyright to the content they publish in the RIHA Journal. They grant the RIHA Journal the right to make their articles available in perpetuity under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Following publication in the RIHA Journal, authors may deposit their articles in open-access repositories. They may also republish their content, provided that they notify the RIHA Journal prior to republication and acknowledge the RIHA Journal as the original source.
Processing Charges for Special Issues
To cover the production cost of Special Issues, RIHA Journal charges guest-editors a moderate contribution. Currently it varies between 300 and 400 € / article, depending on the length and particular requirements of the manuscripts.
