Abstract

Completion and retouching on sculptures and retabels of Rhineland – Examples of preservation in practice

This text presents the problems of completion and retouching and gives examples of sculpture and retables that have been restored since the 1950s in studio I of the Rheinisches Amt für Denkmalpflege. Some of these objects demand restrained intervention, while others with a high degree of complexity need special efforts; these are presented and commented here. These measures represent some of the work done in the state monument office and shed light also on the work done in private conservation labs.
