Abstract

The Baroque Pulpit Altar in the Christus-Kirche of Velgast. Considerations for Restoring its Historical Rear Wall and Supporting Construction
This article deals with the historical rear wall and supporting construction of the pulpit altar in the Christus-Kirche at Velgast/Isle of Rügen. At present the altar is dismantled. This text is based on a study written in 2005, noting that it is possible to restore the historical rear wall exclusively with original elements. Only a few parts are missing. Missing parts could be reconstructed, based on original models. Some of the original parts of the altar like supporting beams, staircase and a vertical board can now be allocated with certainty. The comparison with other altars in the region provides information about the construction of pulpit and stairway as customary in that period. Thus it is possible to make qualified suggestions for the altar in Velgast.
